Rallies 2|Monday, May 01, 2006

sighz!
i am so so frustrated! because i wrote a pretty long entry this morning and because of unstable internet connection, i m doomed.i mean...i lost the ENTRY lah! irritating specimens!ergh.

anyway! yesh.more updates from me on my PERSONAL experiences. haha!yesterday i went to yet another rally. and this one it is the PAP rally. haha!another interesting experience i MUST say. overall...the crowd stays the same. but i dare say that the spirit is more. you can see this from the resounding cheers the crowd gave to the PAP candidates. some even have banners and balloons. and some came as a group and do some 'school' cheer to welcome them. haha! well...u can sense the connection that the people have with the candidates. this may be probably due to the longterm rapport that has been fostered over their years of service to Sembawang GRC.

people must be wondering why i m so hyped up over this general elections. and i am not even voting in the first place. and it is not as if whatever my sentiments are regarding the candidates and the parties are going to have an effect on anybody or anything at all in the first place. but seriously...i m so hyped up because....it is realli realli very exciting and my constituency is being contested. I love SEMBAWANG GRC. i love having stayed my life so long here. i was born in Yishun. then i shifted to Woodlands. then now i am in Marsiling. i spent my childhood here. first at Peixin Primary at Yishun. and then at Fuchun Primary in Woodlands. my teachers live here too. Cikgu Siti Kapil. Mrs Tan Yit Mei. I still see them around though it has been about close to ten years since i last left the school. most of my relatives stay here. my cousins. my *ehem*. my dad has been living here in Sembawang GRC since light years ago, at Kampung Tanjung Irau. sighz. and i love this place. it still has its myserious and left-untouched quirks and corners. lets say...down admiralty road...we haf the admiralty prison. n there are still alot of monkeys in the area. and also there is very small and secluded hospital. people say it is for the mentally deranged. i m not that sure though. and also...there is an orphanage. i last went there when i was at fuchun primary. and if u go further down, you'll get Sembawang Park! another great hideout.besides the beach, my dad n i used to catch crabs at the pier. so exciting right?!! and then...one thing beautiful about that park is the old british houses. so beautiful and yet so mysterious. u will feel like you are part of a horror film scene when you are there. and of course! i used to go for many many picnics there with my old neighbours when i lived at Blk 161 Yishun St 11. sighz. how can i not LOVE sembawang GRC? and i cant forget. the very nostalgic Masjid Pertempatan Sembawang mosque...tucked away from the hustle n bustle of the city and modernisation. an exact replica of the splendid old and peaceful mosques decades ago... here in my neighbourhood...Marsiling is a great place. it is old folks friendly. very very rustic yet incredibly modern. Marsiling itself has a dark past. but that adds on to this feeling of rusticity. people may mention the other great new towns of tampines, pasir ris, sengkang, punggol...but (besides the easy accessibility to JB), Sembawang GRC is a haven. a mysteriously rustic haven. not to mention that behind the old marsiling estate is a great jogging pathway, that overlooks the straits of Johor. perfect end to a tired evening.

i have lived in Sembawang GRC. i have seen people grow. i have seen people get more and more connected with each other. i have seen people getting more acquainted with community activities like brisk walking. i feel for it. people may just say that it is just 'a sense of place' that i have developed in myself, after living here for so so long. but hey. i dun think i want to lose this 'sense of place' that i have embedded deeply in my heart. i would want a certain kind of leadership that is able to enhance this 'sense of place and belonging and attachment', that i have...that the other people of Sembawang GRC have too...for this...if another new party is able to do a much better job than the incumbent, i bet the people here would embrace and welcome them into the Sembawang portals. if not...probably...the new party has to work the ground. maybe it is high time that they realise that...it is the HEARTS of the people that they have to win. not their apolitical minds.

and yes. before i hit my books again...another factor to add on to my list of what would make a good Member of Parliament. RESPECT. i strongly believe that he should be able to RESPECT the voters. he MUST be able to RESPECT the people he is serving. heck the huge amounts of allowance that he may receive...but if he cannot respect other human beings...what makes him such a deserving candidate to claim that he has the people's matters at heart? and for people who think that general elections are a waste of time...and that it is all about politics and you have little and ziltch interest in it...think again. this general elections .... are not about politics in its core. its about us being proud Singaporeans.

yup. just my two-cents worth. i dun think this post of mine has any hints of 'campaigning'. so yup. here it goes. and i have to get back to my mugging for my last paper...Population Geography. it is not as if the winning party will sit for my exams in exchange for my going to their rallies. *wide smiles*
